For the want of a fan, the kingdom was lost

So close...  (photo credit:  Derek Rabold, BIA)
The above photo is what a newly formed sheet of ice looks like after a cooling tower failure.  Our rink has been closed for annual maintenance since the beginning of May.  It was due to reopen this coming Saturday.  The cause of the meltdown is hoped to be a relatively inexpensive fan.  But even it that's the case, it will take at minimum, an additional week to clean up, repaint all the hockey lines, dots, etc. and build the sheet again.  So, your old diarist is still in ice tourist mode.  Sigh...

  1. So sad for you! That picture speaks volumes, but all I can think of is "Ack!" Hope the clean up goes quickly.

  3. My home ice hopes to be back in action this coming Monday (the 17th). We shall see. They've already had to cancel July group lessons and some summer camps.

  4. Oh goodness! What a sad sight for us skaters to see. I hope that they resurface it soon!

  5. As of today, they are still not up and running, sigh...

The system is old enough that the company which supplied it no longer keeps parts in stock; i.e. you need a part? Stand by, we'll make in for you. The City was supposed to build a new rink but at the last minute they looked at the cost overruns and decided to postpone. Others in our town want basketball courts instead so now the new rink idea has become a political football. Too bad the major doesn't have kids that skate! I think we'll be lucky if we have ice at the existing rink by August. I haven't seen my coach since the end of April. We may get together next Tuesday at a different rink if ours isn't functioning by then. Stay cool!
